Co-op Chronicles: Three Students Share Their Journeys in Industry

In this edition of our Co-op Chronicles Series, we’re featuring three students who took their learning beyond the classroom, working in fields ranging from software development to biotechnology. Tejaswini Hiremath – Master of Science in Project Management
Co-op Position: Project Coordinator, Bank of Montreal
What made your co-op experience memorable?
My co-op at BMO was an eye-opener. Working on AI automation and data visualization while collaborating with diverse teams made every challenge exciting. This experience not only grew my skills but also gave me a sense of purpose in making a meaningful impact.
What were your main responsibilities?
I focused on improving the requirements process and enhancing workflow efficiency. My main tasks included gathering requirements, building data models, and creating Power BI visualizations to meet business needs. I also developed Jira dashboards to track team productivity and optimize resource allocation.
How did this co-op enhance your academic development?
I gained hands-on experience with SQL, SAS, Power BI, and Jira, which strengthened my ability to analyze large datasets and create insightful dashboards. These skills have significantly improved my technical expertise and ability to manage complex processes.
What advice would you give to students entering their first co-op?
Approach your co-op with an open mind. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn. Focus on building relationships and finding ways to make a difference.

What are some of your hobbies and other passions? Where do you find your joy?
I find joy in photography and writing poems, exploring AI and automation, and travelling. Travelling has always been my sweet escape, while my passion for data and tech drives me to work harder at my workplace.
Kushal Patel – Master of Science in Information Systems
Co-op Position: Application Developer, CIBC
What made your co-op experience memorable?
My co-op at CIBC was a transformative journey. I had the opportunity to apply my technical skills in a real-world setting, working with an incredible team on complex CRM projects. The experience helped me grow both professionally and personally.
What were your main responsibilities?
I was responsible for managing and enhancing the CRM platform on Salesforce. My tasks included developing and optimizing workflows, integrating third-party applications, and ensuring smooth data flow within the system. By leveraging APIs and Salesforce development, I helped improve team efficiency and deliver valuable tools to support business objectives.
How did this co-op enhance your academic development?
I gained hands-on experience in Salesforce development, CRM management, and Agile methodologies. Working with Apex classes and troubleshooting technical issues expanded my technical toolkit and boosted my confidence in tackling complex projects.
What advice would you give to students entering their first co-op?
Embrace every opportunity to learn and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Building relationships with your team and taking initiative can make a world of difference.

What are some of your hobbies and other passions? Where do you find your joy?
When I’m not immersed in professional projects or sharpening my technical expertise, I love exploring the latest technology trends—especially open-source innovations—and experimenting with new tools and frameworks. I find a lot of joy in diving into tech blogs, forums, and communities to stay informed and expand my skill set. Cooking is also a passion of mine, providing a hands-on creative outlet away from the screen.
Hafsa Saiyed – Master of Science in Biotechnology
Co-op Position: Laboratory Assistant, Testmark Laboratories
What made your co-op experience memorable?
My co-op completely changed my perspective on the field of biotechnology. I was involved in everything from collecting and logging samples to creating work orders and processing them. I even worked on inorganic testing and chromatography, which was an exciting hands-on experience.
What was an initiative or task you were responsible for?
When the sample receptionist was about to leave, I stepped up and managed the entire sample reception process. This opportunity allowed me to showcase my leadership skills while ensuring operations continued smoothly.
How did this co-op enhance your academic development?
I gained practical experience in chromatography, GMP, GLP, and leadership. Seeing how theoretical knowledge applies in a professional setting helped me understand the fundamentals of the field in a whole new way.
What advice would you give to students entering their first co-op?
Be open to any opportunity—don’t limit yourself. Take initiative and make the most of every experience. Networking is also key to success.

What are some of your hobbies and other passions? Where do you find your joy?
One of the greatest joys of my life is exploring nature, especially in the woods. I enjoy reading and learning new things, and I love good music as well. As part of work, I like deep learning and finding solutions to technical problems that gives a sense of accomplishment.
